Marmalades are a Scottish tradition dating back to the late 18th century. A local grocer, James Keiller purchased a cargo of oranges being sold cheaply. Being a Scottsman, he hoped to sell it for profit in his shop. He bought the entire ships cargo, but
the oranges were bitter and he couldn't sell them.
His clever wife took them home with the idea of making a jam. The resulting jam
was hugely successful and was named Marmalade after Marmelos, a
Portuguese word for a quince paste similar in texture to the orange

There is another tale that the wife of Mr. Dundee, a famous purveyor of marmalade, found the oranges washed up on shore from a ship wreck...and industrious lassie that she was....
